Man. January was ROUGH on some folks; present company included. It seemed at the beginning of the month was merely the feeling of coming down with something, but my immune system was a rock star and fought off whatever was attempting to ail me. Then finally, the boxing gloves were gently placed on the ground and the white flag waiving gallantly and bam…I got sick.
I mean, the phrase I often use “illin’ like a villain'” was more than apropos. Kids bring home some serious germs (bless those little petri dishes) and I wound up with fever, chills, body aches, cough, sinus headaches that felt like my head was in a vice, and yeah…needless to say, I found myself scrambling to try to find ways to get better without having to throw down some cheddar only to be told, “you have a cold. Take some Tylenol and feel better.” I’m not indicating you shouldn’t go to the doctor if you’re sick, I just don’t like the trials and tribulations of the whole process so I avoid it if possible.
First things first… Epsom salt soak. I know it probably sounds like something you’ve heard from your grandma, but listen. Grandma was on point! Epsom salts aren’t really a ‘salt’ per say, but rather a naturally occurring pure mineral compound of magnesium and sulfate.
Magnesium plays a number of roles in the body including regulating the activity of over 300 enzymes, reducing inflammation, and helping muscle and nerve function. It’s also known to help relax the nervous system, soothe back pain and aching limbs, ease muscle strain, treat colds and congestion and drawing toxins from the body. Sulfates help improve the absorption of nutrients, and help ease migraine headaches. So next time you’re pondering a long bath with a glass of wine for some “Mommy time”, toss a few cups of Epsom salts in your bath and add a few drops of your favorite essential oil for a more relaxing, soothing experience. I added eucalyptus to help with my congestion and it was wonderful.
Something else Grandma was on point about…the Hot Toddy. Yes, it’s something the bartender at your local watering hole can whip up for you, but who feels like dragging to the bar when you’re under the weather? Fret not. This is one of the easiest cold busting cocktails that you can make at home.
I whipped mine up and enjoyed it while soaking in the tub in my Epsom salts. Yeeeeah, buddy. There are numerous variations of this cocktail as far as what spirit is used, but I took to Sagamore Spirit rye whiskey. It’s only available in Maryland at the moment as it’s a brand spanking new distillery founded by Under Armour founder/creator Kevin Plank (seriously, is there anything this guy can’t do?) but I’ve seen recipes incorporating Wild Turkey, Crown Royal, and Captain Morgan. Pick your poison. I followed the recipe here, and it was not only soothing and kicked my cold to the curb, it was delicious!
